So far this year I have published nine articles, of which five concern relations between law departments and the law firms they retain:
“When Interventions Go Too Far” [interventions in law firm operations] (NY Law Journal, Feb. 28, 2008)
“The Road to Alternative Fees” (NY Law Journal, April 17, 2008)
“A Little Off the Top” [discounts] (Legal Times, April 21, 2008)
“Matching Work to Bonuses” [bonuses for law firms] (NY Law Journal, Aug. 8, 2008)
“Super-Sized Law Firms” [downsides for law departments] (NY Law Journal, Oct. 16, 2008)
The remaining four articles delve into management of law departments other than topics relating to outside counsel:
“Why Bigger Can be Better” [Total Legal Spending Declines with Size) (Legal Times, Jan. 28, 2008)
“Missing and Elusive Metrics” [metrics we don’t know much about] (NY Law Journal, June 19, 2008)
“Journey to the Center of Work” [core competencies] (Legal Times, July 21, 2008)
“When the Law Group Spans the Oceans” [international offices of law departments] (Legal Times, Sept. 22, 2008)
To be published shortly are two more articles, one on several tricky areas of outside counsel guidelines and the other on problematic areas of value billing.
