“Lean Six Sigma” at Xerox

In an interview (Fin. Times, Sept. 23, 2005 at 10), the CEO of Xerox pointed out that its low-fat variation “asks managers to think not only how processes can be improved but also how waste can be reduced.” The article adds that Six Sigma not only aims to improve efficiency, it also introduces a company-wide approach to and shared language for project management.

Law departments of other companies have applied Six Sigma (See my posts of July 31, 2005 about GE, Aug. 27, 2005 about Medco Solutions, and Oct. 19, 2005 about Raytheon.), but the dietetic version, trying to starve wasteful practices, could apply well to law departments. Tangled processes are by definition wasteful.
