A law department think-tank

A large law department rolled out an innovative way to think about improvements. The leadership group picked 10 mid-level lawyers and paralegals and appointed them to be a study group. Leadership brought in speakers for the group to talk about the future of the business, gave them time and resources to meet, and had them go on trips to various locations of lawyers. Their charge was to come up with 10 ideas for improvements in the law department.

The group pondered, thought, and did that, so for each meeting of the leadership team thereafter, the general counsel and direct reports considered one or more of the proposed ideas for improvement. I admire the investment, the mixture of talent, and the specific charge.
